CBS News Plans 24-hour Online News Operation Author: PC Magazine
NEW YORK, July 12 (Reuters)CBS News on Tuesday unveiled plans to enlarge its online presence with a 24-hour broadband Internet service providing video clips that consumers can assemble into their own individually tailored newscasts.
CBS, a unit of Viacom Inc., touted the move as an embrace of the "on-demand" model for delivering news to audiences that spend less time watching TV broadcasts and more time browsing the Web in search of information of particular interest to them.
The expanded CBSNews.com venture, an ad-supported service, will make use of high-speed Internet, or broadband, technology that enables consumers to easily watch audio and video footage streamed to them over the Web.
CBS News executives and industry observers said the on-demand approach goes a step beyond the round-the-clock news programming that CNN pioneered by allowing consumers to select individual stories they want any time they want them.
"Changes in technology have made an entirely new genre possible," CBS News president Andrew Heyward said. "The audience for Internet news is the most desirable audience there is. These are people who aren't looking for linear programming. They don't want to turn on cable news and wait for the news they're interested in."
The on-demand strategy is not without potential pitfalls for CBS, including the risk of cannibalizing its audience for the nightly "CBS Evening News" broadcasts.
